On method

Translation Philosophy
الترجمة ليست نقلاً للألفاظ، بل تفكيكٌ لبنية الفكر وإعادة إحيائها في لسانٍ آخر.
Translation is not the carrying over of words. It is taking a thought’s structure apart and bringing it back to life in another tongue.

Every commission starts here: a glossary of the text’s load-bearing terms, agreed with the author or editor before the first paragraph is drafted.

Services

Three kinds of commission

Most projects are one of these. If yours sits between them, describe it and I will tell you honestly whether it is work I should be doing.

Arabic ↔ English

Academic and policy translation

Monographs, peer-reviewed articles and policy studies, in either direction. Transliteration follows IJMES or Chicago, whichever the press requires, and stays consistent across a multi-author volume.

Pre-production

Scholarly copyediting

Line editing, citation audit and bibliography standardisation for manuscripts going to Brill, Routledge and university presses. Quotations are checked against the Arabic and Western sources they came from.

Tahqīq

Manuscript verification and TEI encoding

Palaeographic transcription, collation of divergent witnesses, and XML/TEI markup for digital critical editions of classical Arabic manuscripts.

About Mohammad

Language, ideas and the Arab world

I work at the intersection of international publishing, regional research, and linguistic precision. Based in Ras Beirut, my practice focuses on academic and policy translation, scholarly copyediting, and manuscript research (tahqīq).

I collaborate with presses, research institutes and authors to bring Arabic and English into closer conversation, ensuring complex works travel with precision, context, and authority.

Writing

Notes from the desk

One note a week on whatever the week’s work turned up: a term that would not cross, a colophon that moved a date, a house style worth arguing with.
